We’ve all had to write essays at some point - for school, work, or even just for fun. 

However, crafting an essay that genuinely engages readers is tougher than it looks. 

When writing isn’t your strong suit, essays can be downright daunting.

I’ve penned my fair share of lackluster essays over the years. 

Ones that felt like a disconnected string of ramblings rather than a cohesive, compelling read. 

But I’ve picked up some useful tips for writing standout essays that truly grip readers.

First, you need an opening hook.

This is a question, quote, story, or something else at the very start that grabs readers' attention right away.

It makes them want to keep reading more.

Next, organize the essay so it flows well from start to finish.

Use headers, and transitions between paragraphs, and put information in an order that makes sense. This helps people follow along easily.

Also, use descriptive yet simple language. Fancy words can muddy things up.

Clear, colorful words and sentences of different lengths keep readers engaged.  

Finally, end with a big finish.

Tie back to the opening hook while highlighting the main points.

Make readers feel like they learned something. Give them something to think about after.
