OPENAI’S NON-PROFIT STATUS FACES SERIOUS SCRUTINY

The News: Public Citizen, a group that looks out for the public's interest, asked the California Attorney General to look into OpenAI. They think OpenAI might be focusing more on making money than following its non-profit rules. OpenAI is split into two parts: a non-profit and a for-profit. Public Citizen is worried because of some changes at OpenAI, like bringing back CEO Sam Altman and removing some board members.

Why it matters: This is important because it's about whether OpenAI is really sticking to its non-profit goals. California law says if a non-profit isn't doing what it's supposed to, it might have to stop being a non-profit and give away its stuff. This isn't the first time people have wondered about OpenAI's setup. While it might not be a huge problem for OpenAI right now, it's another challenge they have to face with all the other legal stuff and people questioning what they do.

AI FINDS FINGERPRINTS MAY NOT BE UNIQUE

The News: Scientists at Columbia University made a new AI system that can tell if different fingerprints might come from the same person. This is a big deal because people always thought every fingerprint was different. The AI looked at 60,000 pairs of fingerprints and paid attention to the shapes and swirls in the middle, not just the little lines like before.

Why it matters: This is super important because it could change how people solve crimes and look at evidence. The AI was right about 77% of the time when it looked at just one pair of prints, and even more right when it had more to look at. This could mean big changes for how police and courts use fingerprints.
