The News: Google's next-gen AI, Gemini, touted as a multimodal system capable of processing diverse data types and generating text, images, and other content based on sketches or descriptions, faces delays in its planned launch events. Concerns about Gemini's reliability in responding to non-English prompts and inquiries have prompted the postponement. The rescheduled events are now expected to take place in early 2024.
Why it matters: While not yet publicly available, Gemini is reported to outperform OpenAI's GPT-4, leveraging significantly more computing power. Google's VP Sissie Hsiao praised Gemini's ability to generate images based on specific requests, such as illustrating the steps to ice a three-layer cake, showcasing its capacity to communicate with humans through imagery, not just text. Gemini's capabilities highlight a shift in the landscape, where Google's offering could potentially surpass the consumer awareness enjoyed by OpenAI's ChatGPT.
The News: OpenAI has informed all paid users including myself via email that the launch of its GPT store is delayed until next year. The delay is attributed to unexpected factors that kept the company occupied. Originally planned for December, the GPT store's release has been postponed to next year due to recent events, including the CEO's ouster, employee unrest, executive departures, and the subsequent reinstatement of the CEO.
Why it matters: The delay in the GPT store launch follows a turbulent period for OpenAI. Despite the setback, the company is actively working on updates for ChatGPT. The GPT store, when launched, will serve as a marketplace for users to sell and share their custom GPTs. This platform was introduced to compensate users for their GPT creations based on usage. The delay provides OpenAI with more time to enhance functionalities and address recent challenges.
The News: Microsoft's generative AI-based chatbot, initially known as Bing Chat and later rebranded as Copilot, has transitioned from public preview to general availability. The chatbot has undergone continuous enhancements since its initial introduction in February. The decision to rename it aligns with Microsoft's other generative AI services.
Why it matters: With Copilot now in general availability, organizations, and users can confidently integrate it into their daily workflows. It is equipped with commercial data protection and operates under the Universal Commercial License Terms for Online Services, including Microsoft's Customer Copyright Commitment. This ensures users can leverage Copilot services without concerns about copyright claims.
