Now To The Newsā€¦

Google Chrome New AI Can Finish Your Sentence For You

The News: Google has introduced an experimental feature called "Help me write" in Chrome M122, using Gemini-powered generative AI.Ā

The Details: Available for English-speaking users in the US on Mac and Windows, it offers writing suggestions for shortform content, like surveys and reviews, based on webpage context.Ā

Users can enable the feature by accessing Chrome's Experimental AI settings. The tool aims to refine messages or requests, but users are cautioned not to input personal or sensitive data.Ā

While it may be helpful for some, concerns include potential misuse for fake reviews and the need for adjustments to suit specific needs.

Reddit Struck One Of The Biggest Data Selling Deal

The News: Reddit had reportedly entered into an annual agreement worth $60 million, allowing an AI company to use its user-generated content for training purposes, yesterday we found out that company was Google!

The Details: Reddit will provide Google access to its data API, offering real-time content and enabling efficient model training. This partnership allows Google to utilize Reddit's vast content corpus for various purposes across its products.Ā

The collaboration also grants Reddit access to Google's Vertex AI, enhancing its search results. While Reddit clarified that this change doesn't impact its data API terms, which restrict commercial use without approval, it reflects a growing trend of companies exploring revenue-generating arrangements with their data.Ā

Vibes Crunch

Google's Gemini hit a bump this week.Ā

Gemini can create images from text prompts.Ā

But some of its pictures of historical figures looked, well, not so historical.

People requested images of early U.S. senators, expecting figures typical of the 1800s ā€” predominantly white men, given the historical context.Ā

However, the results included senators who were women and people of color, which did not align with the actual demographics of the U.S. Senate in the 19th century.Ā

This outcome caused some confusion and surprise, as it did not accurately reflect the historical reality of that period in U.S. history.

Google swiftly paused Gemini's people-painting powers. They admitted the tool had goofed up.Ā

Now when you tell Gemini to draw a person, it says it can't. For now, anyway.

The company wants to upgrade Gemini's image smarts before letting it loose again. They plan to release an improved people-picture version soon.

This little snafu shows AI still has lots to learn. Tools like Gemini don't always get history right. But letā€™s give 'em time.

With the right tweaks, they could become mighty fine artists and fact-checkers.

AI Research

Researchers at the University of Shanghai and the Shanghai Institute of Optics have made a big leap in data storage by beating the "optical diffraction limit."Ā

This means they can store a lot more data on a disk, similar to a DVD, but with the capacity to hold as much as 10,000 Blu-ray discs or 100 high-capacity hard drives.Ā

They did this by using a special two-laser system that writes data in tiny spots, much smaller than before, on a special film. This new disk can store data in 3D, making it possible to keep enormous amounts of information in a small space.Ā

This could be a game-changer for storing big amounts of data, like the internet, in a way that's cheaper and lasts longer up to 100 years. This is great for the environment and could help make big data centers more sustainable.
